This beautifully framed piece features an original piece of watercolor artwork glass-framed in an attractive two inch wide black resin frame with a double mat. The outer dimensions of the framed piece are approximately 17” wide x 24.5” high, although the exact size will vary according to the size of the original piece of art.

At the core of the framed piece is the actual piece of original artwork as painted by the artist on textured 100% rag, water-marked watercolor paper. In many cases the original artwork has handwritten notes in pencil from the artist (be sure to “See the actual artwork without the frame” elsewhere in this website). Simply put, this is beautiful, one-of-a-kind artwork.

The outer mat is a rich textured black acid-free mat with a decorative inset white v-groove, while the inner mat is a complimentary colored acid-free mat reflecting one of the team’s primary colors. The website image of this framed piece shows the mat color that we suggest (Hunter Green), but since each piece is custom framed, we are happy to use whatever color mat you wish (depending on availability) – our standard mat colors are:

Light Blue / Dark Blue / Brown / Maroon (close to brown) / White / Silver / Gold / Yellow (bright yellow) / Green (dark green) / Orange / Purple / Red (bright red, somewhat close to PMS 186)

Beneath the artwork is a silver plate with black text describing the original artwork. The text for this piece will read:

This original, one-of-a-kind watercolor painting of the 1980-81 Minnesota North Stars (now Dallas Stars) jersey is the original artwork that was used in the creation of this Dallas Stars uniform evolution print and tens of thousands of other Dallas Stars products that have been sold across North America. This original piece of art was painted by artist Nola McConnan for Maple Leaf Productions Ltd.

Beneath the silver plate is a 3” x 9” reproduction of a well known, best-selling print that celebrates the history of the team. The print beautifully illustrates the chronological evolution of the team’s uniform and shows you how the original art was used in the creation of this print. If you look closely, you will see that the print features the actual artwork being offered for sale. The 3” x 9” print looks like this:

The piece is framed with an extremely high quality framing glass. We have used this glass style for many years with excellent results. Please note that all of our products come with a 90 day 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Each framed piece also comes with a two page letter signed by Scott Sillcox describing the history behind the art. If there was an extra-special story about your piece of art, that story will be included in the letter. When you receive your framed piece, you should find the letter lightly attached to the front of the framed piece.

If you have any questions, at any time, about the actual artwork or about any of the artist’s handwritten notes on the artwork, I would love to tell you about them. Simply email me, Scott Sillcox, at scott@heritagesportsart.com and I will tell you everything I can about your original piece of art. The artists and I spent well over ten years of our lives creating these pieces of original artwork, and in many cases there are stories I can tell you about your actual piece of artwork that might add an extra element of interest in your one-of-a-kind purchase.

History

In 1977-78 the North Stars were among several teams in finical trouble as they finished in last place with a league worse 18-53-9 record. Following the season the North Stars merged with another struggling franchise the Cleveland Barons. Nothing would change for North Stars, the team was still based in Bloomington and the logo and colors remained the same. However, the team had a new NHL home as they moved from the Smythe Division to the Adams Division. Also, there would be new ownership and new management as Barons GM Harry Howell assumed the coaching duties and Barons owners George and Gordon Gund became co-owners of the North Stars. At the start of the 1980-81 season the North Stars were coming off a trip to the semifinals in the playoffs after finishing in 3rd place with a record of 35-26-17 the season before.  It seemed the merger and move to the Adams Division infused new life into the team and they were now regular playoff contenders.  Bobby Smith, who won the Calder trophy 1978-79, led the team in points with 93. Gritty forwards like Craig Hartsburg, Al MacAdam and Tim Young provided team toughness and timely scoring. And Rookie Dino Ciccarelli chipped in with 18 goals despite only playing 32 games.  Just before the playoffs rolled around the Stars got a boost when Neil Broten, a star forward from the University of Minnesota, joined the team fresh off winning the Hobey Baker Award and leading the Golden Gophers to the NCAA Finals.  Broten was a 3rd round draft pick of the North Stars in 1979.In the playoffs the North Stars scored 20 goals as they swept the Boston Bruins in 3 straight high scoring games in the opening round best-of-five series. Their torrid play continued into the 2nd round where they jumped out to a 3-0 series lead before beating the Buffalo Sabres in 5 games. In the semifinals the Stars faced the surprising Calgary Flames. After splitting the first 2 games in Calgary, the North Stars outscored the Flames 13-8 in 2 straight wins at the Met Center to grab a 3-1 series lead. After dropping Game 5 at home the North Stars made it to their first Stanley Cup Final by extinguishing the Flames 5-3 at the Met Center. However, in the finals they ran into a dynasty in-the making, the mighty New York Islanders. They dropped the first 3 games of the series before ultimately falling in 5 games, giving the Islanders their first of 4 consecutive Stanley Cup victories. During the run to the Cup Final Dino Ciccarelli emerged as a playoff hero for the Minnesota fans. He was the North Stars top player notching 14 goals and 7 assists in 19 playoff games. The North Stars road jersey got a little more colorful as the team began play in the 1980's. The familiar N-star logo was made a little larger and wider bands of yellow trimmed all of the white detailing on the jersey. The collar is a V neck and features all three team colors: green, yellow and white.  The sleeve numerals are larger have a 3-d effect to them as the upper layer white numeral is offset by a recessed yellow numeral behind it.
