This beautifully framed piece features an original piece of watercolor artwork glass-framed in an attractive two inch wide black resin frame with a double mat. The outer dimensions of the framed piece are approximately 17” wide x 24.5” high, although the exact size will vary according to the size of the original piece of art.

At the core of the framed piece is the actual piece of original artwork as painted by the artist on textured 100% rag, water-marked watercolor paper. In many cases the original artwork has handwritten notes in pencil from the artist (be sure to “See the actual artwork without the frame” elsewhere in this website). Simply put, this is beautiful, one-of-a-kind artwork.

The outer mat is a rich textured black acid-free mat with a decorative inset white v-groove, while the inner mat is a complimentary colored acid-free mat reflecting one of the team’s primary colors. The website image of this framed piece shows the mat color that we suggest (Red), but since each piece is custom framed, we are happy to use whatever color mat you wish (depending on availability) – our standard mat colors are:

Light Blue / Dark Blue / Brown / Maroon (close to brown) / White / Silver / Gold / Yellow (bright yellow) / Green (dark green) / Orange / Purple / Red (bright red, somewhat close to PMS 186)

This original, one-of-a-kind watercolor painting of the 2001-02 Detroit Red Wings jersey is the original artwork that was used in the creation of this Detroit Red Wings uniform evolution print and tens of thousands of other Detroit Red Wings products that have been sold across North America. This original piece of art was painted by artist Tino Paolini for Maple Leaf Productions Ltd. 2001-02 was a Stanley Cup winning season for the Detroit Red Wings.

Beneath the silver plate is a 3” x 9” reproduction of a well known, best-selling print that celebrates the history of the team. The print beautifully illustrates the chronological evolution of the team’s uniform and shows you how the original art was used in the creation of this print. If you look closely, you will see that the print features the actual artwork being offered for sale. The 3” x 9” print looks like this:

History

Long forgotten are the days of mediocrity the Red Wings and their fans endured for most of the 1970's and 80's. Now the Red Wings were a perennial powerhouse in the NHL and were expected to challenge for the Cup for since the mid 1990's. The Wings were hungry for their third Championship in five years, and before the 01-02 season began they made moves to give themselves they best chance to win it all. The Red Wings added future Hall of Famers, Luc Robitaille, Brett Hull, and Dominick Hasek to a team already laden with future Hall of Famers.The Red Wings would get off to a fast start and never look back, cruising to the best record in the NHL before the league took a break for the Salt Lake City Olympics. After the Olympics the Wings put it on cruise control allowing injured players to rest and get healthy for the playoff run. They ultimately won the President's Trophy with a 51-17-10-4 record.The playoffs got off to a rocky start as the Wings dropped the opening two games to the Vancouver Canucks. But their fortunes turned in Game 3 thanks to a Nicklas Lidstrom slap shot from center ice that beat Canucks goalie Dan Cloutier. It gave the Wings the lead in the game and they never looked back taking the next four games of the series. . In the 2nd round the Wings really got rolling beating the St. Louis Blues in 5 games.In the conference final the met their arch rival the Colorado Avalanche. Colorado grabbed a 3-2 series lead after 5 games and things looked grim for Detroit. But Hasek delivered back-to-back shutouts, the second coming in a 7-0 Game 7 rout in which the Wings chased long-time nemesis Patrick Roy to the bench.The Carolina Hurricanes were the Eastern Conference champs, unlikely, yet worthy opponents for the Wings in the Stanley Cup final. Carolina drew first blood in the series with a 3-2 OT win at Joe Louis Arena. However, the Wings shook it off and won the next four games to win the Stanley Cup. Nicklas Lidstrom was named Conn Smythe and legendary Coach Scotty Bowman retired during the on ice celebration.The classic look of the Red Wings continues. The cut and shape of the NHL jersey has evolved over the years, but the design and colour scheme of the Red Wings jersey remains consistent.  Note the special Stanley Cup patch on the right shoulder. It is our belief that the custom of both teams wearing a year-specific Stanley Cup patch began in 1988-89 and has continued ever since. The NHL uses a similar patch each year on the Cup finalists uniforms. The patch features an image of the Stanley Cup, with the two conference names and a year reference.
