Some History

In 1985-86 the Calgary Flames were a team loaded with talent featuring the likes of Joe Mullen, Lanny McDonald, Al MacInnis Mike Vernon, Joel Otto, John Tonelli and rookie defenceman Gary Suter. Suter had a terrific season capturing the Calder Trophy with 68 points. Unfortunately there was a team up the road in Edmonton that was just as stacked and had just won back-to-back Stanley Cups.

The Flames finished in 2nd place in the Smythe Division, under head coach Bob Johnson, with a 40-31-9, 89 points, second to 119 points the Edmonton Oilers amassed.  In the playoffs the Flames swept Winnipeg Jets in 3 games straight to set up a Smythe Division Final against the Edmonton Oilers. Things would be different this time as the Flames and Oilers alternated wins with the Fames pulling off the upset in Game 7 in Edmonton. The game is best remembered for the own goal Oilers defenceman Steve Smith scored when he banked the puck off Grant Fuhrs leg giving the Flames a 3-2 win and a berth in the Campbell Conference Finals.

The Campbell Conference Final was a seesaw battle as the Flames exchanged wins with the St. Louis Blues through the first six games. Game 7 in Calgary was just as tight as the Flames emerged victorious with a 2-1 win setting up the first all-Canadian Stanley Cup Final since expansion.

The Flames would get off to a fast start in the Finals as they took Game 1 at home 5-2 against the Montreal Canadiens. However, the Habs would come back in Game 2 and win in overtime; it was all Canadiens after that. The Habs rallied around the performance of 20-year-old Patrick Roy the rest of the way. Roy was sensational posting a 15-5 record, 1 shutout and 1.92 goals against average in the playoffs. Montreal took the next three games to win their 23rd Stanley Cup.

The Flames home jersey worn in the 1985-86 season continues the familiar look the club has worn since their days in Atlanta. The numbers and the flaming C logo are red with yellow trim. The shoulders are red and the sleeves and shirt tail have bands of red and gold.
